Breathe.  When you are feeling overwhelmed, take 10 or 15 seconds to close your eyes, breathe, and focus on the sensation of breathing.  For thousands of years, the focus on breathing has been central to getting more relaxed.  There's a reason for this - it works!

Get out of the office.  If work is your source of stress (or one of them), make sure to get out of the office at least once per day.  Even if it is only for a few minutes, change the scenery.  In the winter, depending on where you live, this may be difficult.  Instead, get up and take a walk around the building.  The important thing is to change your environment and allow yourself to think about something besides work.

Laugh.  Study after study has shown that laughter is one of the most effective ways to reduce stress.  Go to a comedy club, watch a funny movie, or hang out with some friends and relive some funny moments.

Get organized.  Clutter, missing appointments, being late, and losing important items are all significant sources of stress.  Invest some time in organizing your home and your office.  In addition to feeling more at peace in a clean space, it will also make things easier to find.  By getting organized and having a schedule for appointments and errands, you can make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to get where you need to go.  Running late leads to major stress for most people.  You can start small.  Start with a single room of your house to get organized and then use that as your "happy place" where you can go to relax.

Meditate.  Numerous studies have proven that people who meditate have much larger brains in the areas associated with well-being and relaxation.  In fact, meditation is growing rapidly in popularity among everyday people and among doctors as a way to treat everything from stress to personality disorders to overeating.
